ACH vs Wire Transfer: Which Should You Use?

If you need to move money between bank accounts in the US, you have two main options: ACH (Automated Clearing House) and wire transfers. They solve different problems.

ACH transfers

ACH is the workhorse of US bank payments. It handles direct deposits, bill payments, and business-to-business transfers. The key characteristics:

  • Cost: typically $0.20–$1.00 per transaction, or free if your bank bundles it into a business account plan
  • Speed: 1–2 business days for standard ACH; same-day ACH is available for a small premium
  • Best for: recurring payments, payroll, vendor invoices, any transfer where speed isn't critical

Wire transfers

Wires are the express lane. They settle within hours (often minutes for domestic wires) and are final — once sent, they can't be reversed.

  • Cost: $15–$35 for outgoing domestic; $10–$25 for incoming
  • Speed: same-day, often within hours
  • Best for: time-sensitive payments, large one-time transfers, real estate closings, legal settlements

The real comparison

On a $5,000 transfer:

  • ACH: ~$0.95 fee → you pay 0.019% of the amount
  • Wire: ~$25 fee → you pay 0.5% of the amount

The wire costs roughly 26× more. For most business payments that aren't time-critical, ACH is the clear winner.

When wires make sense

Despite the cost, wires are worth it when:

  • The payment must arrive today (real estate, legal deadlines)
  • The amount is large enough that the fixed wire fee is negligible relative to the total
  • You need the finality of a wire — once settled, the recipient can't reverse it

International considerations

Neither ACH nor domestic wire is designed for international payments. For cross-border transfers, look at Wise or Payoneer, which offer much better exchange rates than bank wire FX margins.
