Frequently asked questions

How is US sales tax calculated?

Sales tax is calculated as a percentage of the purchase price, using a combined state, county, and city rate. This calculator multiplies the price you enter by the selected state's total rate to show the tax amount and final total.

Do I owe sales tax on online purchases?

After the 2018 Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, states can require online sellers to collect sales tax if they have economic nexus (typically $100K+ in sales or 200+ transactions in the state).

Which states have no sales tax?

Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska have no state sales tax. Alaska allows local jurisdictions to impose their own sales taxes.

Is sales tax the same everywhere in a state?

No. Counties and cities can add their own sales tax on top of the state rate. This calculator uses average local rates — your actual rate may be higher or lower depending on your location.

Are services taxed alongside goods?

It varies by state. Some states tax services as well as physical goods, while others tax only goods or only specific services. Check your state's rules for how your particular service is treated.

When do I need to charge sales tax as an online seller?

You must collect and remit sales tax in a state once you pass its economic nexus thresholds (revenue or transaction counts). Once you cross those in a state, you're required to register and collect tax on sales to buyers there.
