Quarterly Estimated Taxes Explained
Unlike employees who have taxes withheld from each paycheck, freelancers must estimate and pay their own taxes quarterly. Missing these deadlines or underpaying triggers IRS penalties.
Quarterly deadlines (2025)
| Quarter | Income period | Due date |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Jan 1 – Mar 31 | April 15, 2025 |
| Q2 | Apr 1 – May 31 | June 16, 2025 |
| Q3 | Jun 1 – Aug 31 | September 15, 2025 |
| Q4 | Sep 1 – Dec 31 | January 15, 2026 |
Note: Q2 is only 2 months (Apr–May), while Q3 and Q4 cover 3 months each.
When you must pay
You must make estimated payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more in taxes for the year after subtracting withholding and credits. Most freelancers qualify.
The safe harbor rule
If you pay at least 100% of your prior year tax liability (110% if your AGI was over $150,000), you won't owe underpayment penalties — even if you end up owing more this year. This is the easiest way to avoid penalties.
How to calculate payments
Use our Quarterly Tax Calculator to estimate each payment. Enter your expected annual income and prior year tax to get exact quarterly amounts.
What happens if you miss a deadline?
The IRS charges penalties based on the unpaid amount and how late you are. The penalty is essentially interest — currently around 8% annualized. While one missed quarter isn't catastrophic, penalties compound over time.
tips for managing quarterly payments
- Set aside 25–35% of every payment you receive into a separate tax savings account
- Automate transfers — treat tax savings like a non-negotiable bill
- Use the safe harbor — pay 100% of last year's tax to eliminate penalty risk
- Adjust mid-year — if income changes significantly, recalculate your quarterly payments
